Ozone
Sterilization for Bottled Water
Ozone is one of the most
powerful oxidants available for potable water disinfection and has been used
in this role since the late 1890s. It has been the disinfectant of choice in
the majority of European and Canadian water plants since the 1940's, due to
its oxidation properties, lack of residual, and its taste and odor control
abilities when properly applied.
Ozone is one of the strongest commercially available oxidizers, making it
popular as a primary disinfectant of bottle water.
Recent
changes in legislature and industry guidelines have increased the need for
ozone in the beverage industry in general. In bottled water plants, ozone
can be used to disinfect product water to comply with International Bottled
Water Association (IBWA) guidelines while leaving no residual taste or odor.
At beverage plants, ozone can reduce or eliminate the need for chemical or
high temperature disinfection processes , reducing downtime and chemical
costs. The effectiveness and cost benefits of ozone for these uses is proven
in many locations throughout the world.
Ozone provides the following benefits to the beverage market:
-
Ozone is far superior to any other cleaning method because of its high
oxidation power.
-
Use of ozone allows for lower operating costs. Ozone reduces overall
chemical costs, discharge assessments and plant downtime.
-
With ozone disinfection, each cleaning program is the same as the
previous one, translating repeatability into reliability.
-
Ozone is not typically associated with by-products or contamination,
and naturally reverts to oxygen, so no taste or odor is associated with
its use.
-
Ozone is generated on-site, so no dangerous storage or handling is
required.
-
The IBWA suggests a residual ozone content of 0.2 to 0.4 ppm of ozone
in bottled water, providing disinfection of both the water and the bottle.
-
Ozone disinfection technology has excelled in beverage applications.
Absolute Ozone® Generators are proven in the bottled water and beverage
industry including Pepsi and Coca-Cola plants and backed by many years of application experience.
-
Higher concentration of ozone increases
ozone transfer efficiency from typical 20-30% at 2-3% concentration to
75-95% at 6-14% concentration, reduces virtually to zero an off
gas and
enables to dissolve ozone with a much smaller recirculation pump.
Therefore ozone stays in the water and disinfects instead of being
destructed or discharged out.
